Wearing your shirt backwards: Trend on trial

Today, I thought I’d delve into one of those tricky trends that emerge each year from the synthesis of both street style and runway fashion. Last year was the year of the culottes (which I still love tbh.) This year, the trend on trial is none other than wearing your shirt backwards; back to front, or however else you want to call it (Sidenote: I know the "name" is ridiculously periphrastic but I swear I couldn't find a  sweet and snappy word for it. I'm listening for naming ideas...) . The styling trick is that you wear the button up bit on the back, preferably leaving a number of buttons undone.

It’s one of those trends that seem really hard to be pulled off unless you have a model’s physique, your back is always straight and magical too, keeping all shirts on, no matter how loose and open. I knew then that if I wanted to avoid any embarrassing public wardrobe malfunctions, adjustments had to be made.

The shirt I chose to wear is on the short side. Not one of those oversized ones you usually see. That meant that I was safe from looking like a homeless person, which unfortunately can happen to me. (Perhaps it’s the combination of long curly hair and drowning clothes. I am determined, though, to execute it and look like myself one day.) The back was kept mostly fastened. It seemed more appropriate seeing as I was going nowhere fancy or fashionable. There would be a problem with my bra showing too and if I omitted that, again, a flashing of a kind would be very likely.

I might have ended up with a boring version of the trend in the end but to be honest, I’m quite pleased. It’s too often that I fall into a styling rut, wearing the same outfit over and over again. Since I don’t like buying uncontrollably, the challenge for me is trying to mix up the clothes I already own in new and unexpected ways. I’ll be the first one to admit that most times my outfits are quite simple. But I get bored. Sometimes trying to move even just a little further away from your comfort zone, can seem incredibly daunting. And yet, when that happens, I’m convulsed with a rare confident boost. There have been failures of course. They’re unavoidable when trying new things. I learnt however that they’re worth it, even just for that feeling of having had the guts to walk out in an outfit that might make your fellow commuters think they have turned myopic.

To be frank with you, when I decided to wear my shirt backwards, challenging my outfitting skills was not my sole motivation. I’m also weary of button up shirts, period. There was a time in my life that I was really into that whole shebang. Cute shirts worn under jumpers or on their own, perhaps even a pretty necklace peeking under the collar. You know the drill. It was all a preppy fantasy that I just don’t fancy revisiting anytime soon. This negation of wearing shirts in the way I used to, makes me think of just how emotive and how closely connected to our psyche dressing up is. In my case, I simply feel so different to the person I was back then that I want no associations linking me back to that period. Now, I realise that I’ve made it seem like I was going through an awful period, but it’s more like "been there, done that". In a way then, reinventing your clothes is as vital and natural as reinventing yourself.

So, I won’t be wearing my shirts in a normal manner any time soon, unless their oversized and I manage to somehow turn into Caroline de Maigret. Until then, backwards it is.

What I'm wearing: Zara shirt (old, similar here), Topshop Jeans, Converse Trainers, Urban Outfitters Backpack (old, similar here and here).
